Family Fun at Grizzly Halloween Camp

This weekend we packed up Miriam and Zipporah and passed them on to Grandpa and Grandma so the rest of us could enjoy the Cub Scout Grizzly Halloween Camp at Camp Hansen.

I attended Camp Hansen for Girl Scouts a million years ago and loved it. I went as a Junior to the week-long camp two or three times and then as a Cadette to the 10 or 12 day-long camp three times, I believe. I followed it up by being a Resident Assistant for the next four years. I LOVED Camp Hansen and have so many wonderful memories there. It was great to go back and enjoy it with my family. (minus two :)

Setting Up Camp

Rebekah and Paul set up the kid tent. Rebekah, Samuel, Jacob, and Paul all slept here.

Jacob stopped to smile as he and Samuel were working with Daddy to set up the tent Gordie, Peter, and I slept.

More "tenting" -- these pictures might be out of order.

Peter checking out the nature.

And he likes it!

Weblos Learning Stuff

I believe they were making a fire here. Samuel is tucked in on the right.

Peter and I

Peter and I trucked ALL OVER Camp Hansen and it was great. The scenery is a lot how I remembered it, though some things have changed. The roads are bit different, the Lake is missing some trees and the water is definitely up. But generally, the feel of the camp -- the smells, the air, the peace, the nature -- it's all there. And it is good.

Samuel and Rebekah are Weblos age, so they did their thing separate from the other groups. Gordie is a co-leader of that group, so he mostly hung out with them. Jacob and Paul adventured around with the rest of Pack 133 for their activities.

Peter and I floated around trying to catch up with everyone. We wandered out to the Weblos, then back to see Jacob and Paul do bouldering. Then back to the Weblos, then lunch with Jacob and Paul, then nap (but it was too hot in the tent for a nice long nap -- this was more like a sip of a nap) And then out to see Rebekah and Samuel do bloudering, and back to the dining hall for Jacob and Paul to make pumpkins. And this is only about half the day. Our time there was PACKED FULL!!

Selfie with Peter, to try and capture some oft he gorgeous scenery.

Arts and Crafts

Samuel and Rebekah with their pumpkins.

This is Jacob's little clay pumpkin he made.

Jacob was so proud he made a little imprinted J on the back of his pumpkin.

Here is Paul's clay pumpkin creation.

Paul was so excited that he had put "a butt" on his pumpkin. -- Oh little boys!

Jacob and Paul.

I have no idea what they are doing here, but it looks kind of crafty. Of course, they might just be eating chips for lunch. Hard to tell.

Halloween Fun

Gordie braiding Rebekah's hair so she could be Wednesday (on a Saturday :) -- It was actually really dark at this point, after sunset, and he is doing this by flashlight. The flash on my camera definitely lit it up for a moment, though.

Rebekah as Wednesday. Too bad we ran out of time to powder her face.

Peter the puppy (outfit courtesy of Grandma -- for one of the older children when they were a baby -- I think maybe Jacob).

Happy puppy Peter.

Peter later morphed into a dinosaur puppy.

Daddy and his dino-puppy.

I added this photo to show Samuel's costume (his gi, he went as an Aikido student) and Jacob has a turtle shell on his back (he went as a ninja turtle, dressed like a cub scout). Paul was a dinosaur. Gordie has the pictures of them on his phone and I have not been able to retrieve them yet.

Tired Rebekah.

Still tired Rebekah, but happy, too.

Very unflattering picture of Mom to show cute Peter. -- Selfies are hard with a "traditional" camera.

We were both so tired. Camping out is hard on mommies with little babies used to their own beds.

But Peter's still cute, no matter what.

Good Bye, Camp Hansen -- until next year.

7 Quick Takes -- I don't want to forget!

There are so many things happening in my life and I'm afraid I'm going to forget some of the little wonders. I am so grateful to have a place to jot them down (and share them). So without further ado --

1) Zipporah ADORES me.

You are probably thinking, "well, of course she does." But honestly, she has been getting so much more independent, toddling off with her big sister, Miriam all the time, I thought I had slipped off her radar. But now when she is playing with the other kids, when she spots me, she stops and smiles so big! She will often come over and have me pick her up for just a bit. And then I will ask if she wants to go play again and she will run off, back to what she is doing. I love how smiling at her, makes her smile back -- and not just smile, but her whole being just lights up the room. She is so sweet.

2) Peter got his six-month shots.

Peter got his six-month shots about a week ago now. Boy, he took them hard, though. I guess that means they were really working, but seriously, low fever and extra fussy for a couple days. It has been a rough week for him!

3) Peter seems smaller than the other kids.

In fact, Zipporah seemed smaller, too. Rebekah and and all the big boys, even Miriam, I remember being quite robust babies. The last two, however, have seemed smaller for their age. I wonder if that is because I'm older/have had more children, or if it is simply by design -- the luck of the gene draw.  I will have to dig up the stats on all the kiddos and do a comparison post.

Rebekah and Peter -- all smiles!

4) Rebekah helped Daddy work on cars yesterday.

I have often been invited to help work on cars, by my brother when I was younger, and now sometimes by my husband. Unfortunately I have little interest and VERY LITTLE skill. I can sometimes find the right wrench. But anything beyond putting in the gas or checking the oil is really out of my comfort zone.

In any case, yesterday Gordie did some maintenance on our vehicles and Rebekah was his partner in crime. It made my heart happy to have her help him as she is always complaining she sees me all day, and Daddy very little. I imagine she was helpful and she seemed to enjoy herself, even if cars are not really her thing either (which I cannot tell yet at this point.)

5) I am enjoying my part-time job.

In case you missed it, I have started doing some transcription work for a company called Noble Transcription Service. I really enjoy it. A lot of the things I transcribe are really interesting and sometimes funny. This last job has been transcribing people doing math word problems, out loud, for a study. Who would have thought of typing up the transcript for something like that?!?!

It does add a little stress to my day, knowing I have a deadline to get my work done, but I really enjoy using my brain again for "serious work" -- as we all know the duties of motherhood and housewifery are often a bit more menial.

6) Gordie gave me a day off!!

My dear hubby so kindly gave me a day off last week. It was wonderful to be "off duty" for the day. I got some much needed rest (seriously, I slept most of the day -- I was just getting run down with a lot of insanity lately) and he even got Rebekah almost caught up in her toughest subject!

7) I am a morning person.

Being pregnant makes me SLEEPY -- like all the time SLEEPY. Now, I am finally starting to feel like myself again (mental note, 6 months is about how long a postpartum recovery I need) and I have naturally started waking up earlier again. And THANK GOD, because I am more productive between the hours of 5am and 8am than I am any other time of day. Seriously. In fact, getting up early to get stuff done and then napping later is definitely how I roll here. And it is good, too, since my hubby likes to sleep in. Now I can be the one to either get him up if needed, or wrangle the kiddos and keep the house rolling until he awakens.

7 Quick Takes -- children update

It just dawned on me that I have seven children so I can give one update on each of them to make a super-fun, super-quick post. I'm timing myself, by the way, because I am short on time today. So here we go:

1) Rebekah

She is behind in school. Middle school level in the virtual school we do looks more like college to me. It is brutal. We are praying we come out on top at the end of the first semester in December.

2) Samuel

He has become the baby whisperer. I kid you not. He used to just hold Peter, limply and whine about how he could not make him happy and Peter would rage on. Now, when Peter is fussy, I ask Samuel to take him. Samuel sings to him and walks him around gently and calms him like no other.

I often ask Samuel to a screaming baby, only to find Peter totally chill in Samuel's arms, 5 or 10 minutes later.

3) Jacob

He is turning a corner on being compliant. He was giving me a lot of trouble on the start of the school year, but now he willingly does his studies with no trouble.

4) Paul

Paul with his Grandma.

Paul is learning he can have an attitude, but I don't think he really means to. His latest joke is to respond to my requests with, "n--o" (as in spelling it out). Then when I go ballistic on him he quickly says it was a joke. Let's hope he outgrows this stage soon.

5) Miriam

Since she was disturbing Zipporah's naps (as they now share the same room) I concluded she no longer "needs" naps. Some days she is a little overtired in the evening, but generally she does okay. Of course, I'm not sure I'm ready for her not to nap -- I sometimes need a little bit of a break from the preschooler, you know?

6) Zipporah

This girl is into everything. She wants to do everything the big kids do, from putting dishes in the dishwasher to putting away the toys. It is such a joy to watch her figure things out.

Also, I think she might be a natural at playing basketball some day. She has an uncanny knack for being DIRECTLY IN MY WAY. No matter where I want to go, she is in the way, almost all the time, but especially when I'm cooking and/or in a hurry.

7) Peter

Peter does not nap. He is tired. He needs naps. I have tried everything -- nursing to sleep in my lap, rocking, putting him in the swing, wearing him. He just will not stay asleep if not latched on, so he is making everyone's life miserable these days. Fortunately he sleeps well at night, so I have not gone totally insane yet.
