No, it is not a special occassion, but Rebekah needed a new bike (her knees were hitting the handlebars). I tried to find a used one, but was having some trouble and even the one I almost got was a boys' bike - not so exciting for "a little princess." So anyhow, the hubby suggested we just get her one at the store (tax return is burning a hole in his pocket obviously). I was skeptical, but she really did need one. Then, at the store, we ALMOST got a generic (ok, really it would be a boys') bike, but Rebekah REALLY did not like it (not that I blame her - orange is not really my color either). So Daddy (who is COMPLETELY wrapped around his little girl's finger) decided that just because she had three younger brothers, Rebekah was still a girl and deserved girly things (and we also concluded that maybe we could spray-paint it later if necessary). So that was that. Now we just have to teach her to ride without training wheels as they would not fit on this larger frame. But all in all I am excited for her.
Of course, as we were getting ready to leave, the kids were looking over the toys in the check-out asile and of course, asking for some. Rebekah even had the audacity to ask for a toy and I said, "Rebekah, you are getting A BIKE!!!" She responded, "but the boys got TWO things!!" Seriously?!?! (Samuel got a new pair of shoes to play soccer, since his were slip-ons they kept falling off, and a 98 cent toy car - Jacob only got a couple dollar tractor - normally we don't buy toys, but they were overwhelmed with the bike bit and Momma felt a little guilty.) Fortunately it gave me another chance to hop on my soap box about how life is not fair - and to point out that it was not only not fair, but it was not fair in Rebekah's favor!!! I think she began to understand after a bit. Oh children - so innocent :)
"not fair, but not fair in Rebekah's favor" ... :)
